On the backdrop of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s comments that ChatGPT may ‘eliminate’ jobs, a report has now said that India had 45,000 jobs in Artificial Intelligence (AI) as of last month. A report titled – ‘Initiative for Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET) – Forces Shaping Future of Technology’ by Teamlease, a human resources company has said that the demand for AI skillset in the country is on the rise.
According to the report, cited by several publications, 37 per cent of the organisations equip their employees with relevant tools to develop their AI skills. 30 per cent of the surveyed organisations reportedly said that AI learning initiatives are mandatory, even as 56 per cent of the basket said that they have taken up AI initiatives to fill up the talent gap.
In February, India and the United States launched the initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET). The first meeting under the umbrella was held in Washington DC last month.
Over the weekend, OpenAI CEO Altman said that he was afraid AI could ‘eliminate’ a lot of jobs. “It is going to eliminate a lot of current jobs, that’s true. We can make much better ones. The reason to develop AI at all, in terms of impact on our lives and improving our lives and upside, this will be the greatest technology humanity has yet developed,” he said. His comments came even as ChatGPT launched its ChatGPT Plus subscription service in India.
“Great news! ChatGPT Plus subscriptions are now available in India. Get early access to new features, including GPT-4 today,” OpenAI said in a tweet.
Meanwhile, according to the report AI is expected to add 15.7 trillion to the global economy in 2030. Of this, India is expected to grab a pie of $400-500 billion by 2025 and over $900 billion by 2035.
