For the first time, all voters above 80 years and persons with disabilities (PwD) can vote from home during the Karnataka Assembly elections 2023. The announcement in this regard was made by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar while addressing a press conference on Saturday over poll preparedness in the state.
The assembly elections in Karnataka are scheduled to take place in May this year. Notably, the term of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly is till 24th May 2023. The assembly polls in the state will take place before that.
Speaking on providing voting from home facility to above 80 and PwD voters, Kumar said that they need to fill 12D form. This will be available within five days of the release of the notification by the Election Commission
“For the first time, we are going to provide in Karnataka the facility to all 80+ & PwD voters, if they so desire, to vote even from their homes.,” the CEC said.
He further added, “There is a form 12D which will be available within 5 days of the notification so that any 80+ or PwD voter, desirous of voting from home, can be facilitated.”
The three-member Election Commission of India is on a three-day visit to Karnataka to review preparations. Kumar, Election Commissioners Anup Chandra Pandey and Arun Goel are in Bengaluru to review the poll preparedness for the upcoming polls in Karnataka.
Notably, in the 2018 Assembly elections, BJP won 104 seats and emerged as the single largest party, while the Congress and JD(S) bagged 78 and 37 seats, respectively.
