Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar movie review: What happens when a khoobsurat ladka Micky falls in love with Timmy, who wants totally opposite things in her life? Well, disaster is the word. Ranbir Kapoor as Micky and Shraddha Kapoor as Tinny in Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, undoubtedly make a sizzling hot pair on-screen, but the narrative is just too intolerable, even for the actors to shine. The first half of the TJMM is disappointing, with some can-be-avoided scenes and song sequences. Some parts of the film will remind you of Ranbir Kapoor’s Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani‘s Kabir, while some will take you back to Rockstar’s Jordan, and others will remind you of Tamasha’s Ved. The film is funny in parts and Luv Ranjan tried to pick up the film in the second half, and did it so with the climax and some surprising twists, however, it still remains to be an average Bollywood rom-com drama. Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar movie review: Storyline
Essentially Ranbir Kapoor’s last rom-com of his career (as he mentioned earlier in several interviews with entertainment publications), the film basically revolves around Micky and Tinny meeting at the bachelor’s party of their respective best friends. Micky is a break-up guru along with his friend Mannu (Anubhav Singh Bassi), and Tinny has a nine-to-five job. Eventually, with some light moments and flirting, they fall in love. Soon, wedding bells ring and they are about to be engaged but break up. And a break-up song, and another happy song later, we have an emotional confrontation, and a funny climax – a typical airport scene.
TJMM shows Ranbir Kapoor aka Micky as a family-oriented person, and Shraddha Kapoor, who is an independent girl, who believes in making a living for herself, and a not-so-much family person. What will you do if your boyfriend takes you out on a date and surprise, it’s a date with his entire family? The gist of the film lies in the answer. The film picked up in the second half but wasn’t able to fully impress.
I have to give it to director Luv Ranjan for touching on a very common issue that most couples go through, especially in today’s time. Though the narrative of the film was weak, Ranbir and Shraddha starrer was good in bits and parts. The comic timings and punchlines of Bassi were good but he still needs to establish himself as an actor. Dimple Kapadia was an absolute delight and I wish Boney Kapoor was given some more lines and screen space.
Talking about Ranbir’s monologue, well it is a bit too much stretched. The cameo of Kartik Aaryan and Nushrratt Bharuccha is refreshing and it seems more of a crossover of Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety.
Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar movie review: Performances
Ranbir Kapoor is always a delight to watch on-screen, and he did shine as Micky despite a loosely-written narrative. From his comic timings to being self-obsessed boy-next-door, to his charm and shirtless scenes, Ranbir did a great job. However, it would be refreshing to see him in some different roles, than what he had already done before.
Shraddha Kapoor as Tinny justified her role. Well, she did not miss the beat in the entire storyline. Shraddha has some amazing shots in bikini looks and some gorgeous dresses. There is no doubt in saying that she looks good with Ranbir on-screen.
Dimple Kapadia plays the role of Ranbir Kapoor’s mother and she slays it like a diva. Dimple too has perfect comic timings and beautifully portrays a Punjabi mother, who can randomly slap anyone, and no one minds.
Anubhav Singh Bassi plays the role of Mannu, who is Ranbir’s bestfriend. Bassi is flawless with his punchlines, however, he still needs to establish himself as an actor.
Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar movie review: Direction
Director Luv Ranjan, who is known for hits such as Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Pyaar Ka Punchnama 1, and Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2, failed to deliver a good narrative to rom-com fans. The direction was weak in parts and was loosely written. He did take the build-up in the first half and all twists in the second-half route, but it seems, he lost way, somewhere in the middle. However, the climax did its trick and will leave the cine-goers laughing and clapping. The dialogues and the punchlines are whistle-worthy in some parts.
Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar movie review: Conclusion
If you are a rom-com fan, you will be disappointed. For Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor fans, it’s a one-time watch.
