Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates met Reserve Bank of India governor Shaktikanta Das at the central bank’s regional office in Mumbai and held discussions on a range of issues. They held discussions on financial inclusion, payment systems, microfinance and digital lending.
“Had an excellent meeting with Bill Gates on financial inclusion, payment systems, microfinance and digital lending, etc,” Shaktikanta Das tweeted after the meeting.
Bill Gates had informed about his India visit in his blog last week saying, “”I’m headed back to India next week. Although I’ve spent a lot of time there over the years—doing everything from checking out toilets to visiting a village that’s home to the one poorest, most underserved castes in India—I haven’t been back since before the pandemic. I can’t wait to see how much progress has been made in that time.”
Bill Gates hails India
The meeting comes just days after the billionaire hailed India and said that the country gives hope for the future. He added that India proved that it could solve the big problems at once even when the world is facing multiple crises.
In his blog “Gates Notes”, the Microsoft co-founder said that he believed that the world is capable of making progress on lots of big problems at once with the right innovations and delivery channels. He added that usually, he received a response like, “There isn’t enough time or money to solve both at the same time.”
He also said that India has developed a world-leading approach to innovation that ensures solutions reach those who need them. Bill Gates highlighted how India decided to make the rotavirus vaccine, which prevents the virus that causes many fatal cases of diarrhoea, when it was too expensive to reach every child.
