The grand old Congress party’s 85th plenary session’s second day commenced with an opening address by party president Mallikarjun Kharge. Besides Kharge, former party chief and Gandhi family matriarch Sonia Gandhi in her capacity as chairman of the parliamentary party addressed the plenary session as well where she made a big announcement.
In her plenary address, Gandhi implied her retirement, saying her “innings could conclude with the Bharat Jodo Yatra”.
“Our victories in 2004 and 2009 along with the able leadership of Dr Manmohan Singh gave me personal satisfaction but what gratifies me most is that my innings could conclude with the Bharat Jodo Yatra, a turning point for Congress,” she said.
She went on to say that strong workers are the strength of the party and that the Congress is not just a political party, but there is a democracy here.
Congress is considering creating a “Vision Document 2024”, as per media reports, to help the party win the next Lok Sabha elections as it holds its 85th plenary session in Raipur.
After the “largest-ever” public engagement programme Bharat Jodo Yatra, Congress will reportedly develop Vision Document 2024, which would address concerns with unemployment, the eradication of poverty, inflation, women’s empowerment, job creation, and national security.
The criterion for Congress’ desire to develop a national alliance is that it takes the initiative. But, figures like Telangana CM K Chandrashekhar Rao and Trinamool Congress alongside Aam Aadmi Party are taking a different stance. There are many like-minded parties that have no issue with Congress becoming the dominant party in the alliance.
