Australia are taking on India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2022, and have suffered a torrid run of form in the series in the subcontinent. They have lost both Tests by a comprehensive margin within the first three days of the game. Adding to salt to their already deep wounds, the team is constantly being depleted, either due to injuries to some players or them returning home due to their personal issues. After Mitchell Swepson, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and David Warner, star spinner Ashton Agar is also set to return to Australia.
According to a report by ESPN Cricinfo, Ashton Agar is set to return to Australia to polish his skills in domestic cricket. Agar will play for Western Australia in their Sheffield Shield game beginning from March 2, while he will also represent them in the Marsh Cup, the 50-over tournament from March 8.
Mitchell Swepson returned to Australia before the 2nd Test in Delhi, for the birth of his child and is set to fly back to India before the third Test in Indore. Pat Cummins flew back to Australia for personal reasons and it is still not clear whether he would return back to India. On the other hand, Josh Hazlewood and David Warner both have been ruled out for the remainder of the series due to injury.
Ashton Agar, who was brought to India as one of the four spinners in the Australian side for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, did not play a single match. In the first game, Australia went in with two spinners, with debutant Todd Murphy alongside the veteran Nathan Lyon. In the second game, the Baggy Greens opted for three spinners and Ashton Agar still could not find his way into the playing XI. Alongside Lyon and Murphy, Matthew Kuhnemann was chosen to make his Test debut.
