In yet another policy change, microblogging platform Twitter has said it will start charging its users to authenticate and secure their account via text messages as a two-factor authentication (2FA) method after March 20.
Which means that only paid subscribers will be able to use text messages as a two-factor authentication method to secure their accounts.
In a blog post, the Elon Musk-led company said users will now not be able to enroll in the text message/SMS method of two-factor authentication unless they are Blue subscribers.
Currently, Twitter offers three methods of two-factor authentication – text message, authentication app and security key.
The microblogging platform further said that it encourages non-Blue users to “consider using an authentication app or security key method instead.” “These methods require you to have physical possession of the authentication method and are a great way to ensure your account is secure,” it added.
For users in India, Twitter Blue service, signifying validity, costs Rs 650 and Rs 900 per month on the website and mobile, respectively. Also if you decide to take the annual subscription, you end up receiving Rs 1,000 discount. So instead of paying Rs 7,800, you only pay Rs 6,800.
