Petronas, Malaysia’s state-run oil & gas giant, is scouting for land in Tamil Nadu for its proposed green hydrogen and ammonia plants.
Petroleum Nasional Bhd or Petronas, which signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the state government of Tamil Nadu in July 2022, is reportedly seeking a land parcel of as much as 10,000 acres for the development of the plants, which will also require solar plants to operate.
Tamil Nadu is reportedly ready to support the Malaysian company through capital or turnover subsidies.
According to a report in the Hindu, Tamil Nadu’s Minister for Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce Thangam Thennarasu met Tengku Muhammad Taufik, President & Group CEO, Petronas, at Davos earlier this month and discussed the July 2022 MoU for the development of Green Hydrogen manufacturing plant.
Tamil Nadu is anticipating similar investments from Japanese giant Mitsubishi.
The land identification for Petronas and Mitsubishi’s approval was understood to have featured in the discussion between Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and a delegation of the state industries led by its minister Thennarasu, who attended the Davos summit of the World Economic Forum.
Southern Tamil Nadu, which enjoys ample sunlight for most of the year, is believed to be a viable location for such plants; green hydrogen plants also require solar plants to support and operate them.
The proposed green hydrogen and ammonia plants, if built, will bring immense benefits to the people of Tamil Nadu and the country as a whole by reducing dependence on fossil fuels and promoting a cleaner, greener environment.
