Team India’s exceptional start to 2023 became even better when they sealed the three-match ODI series against New Zealand in the first two games, following the series win in T20Is and ODIs against Sri Lanka. In a World Cup year – where each and every match, especially ODIs, is critical – the Indian team has to ensure that they not only plug the holes, if any, in the line-up but also that the players remain fit and fresh for the marquee event. Having won the first two ODIs, the Men in Blue can tick a couple of more boxes by winning the third match in Indore, a clean sweep and become the number one in the 50-over format in the ICC rankings.
New Zealand came to India being the number one ODI side having won the series against Pakistan 2-1. However, The Indian team too was breathing down the Black Caps’ neck having beaten Sri Lanka 3-0. Now with two consecutive losses, the New Zealand side lost its numero uno position and England, who were behind them rose to the top. But now, the Rohit Sharma-led side has the opportunity to topple Jos Buttler’s men on Tuesday, January 24.
Currently, the Indian team is in the number three spot, however, the difference between the top three teams is negligible. England, New Zealand and India – all three have the same number of rating points (113) and if the Men in Blue do win the third ODI encounter in Indore, they will overtake both the teams above them and become the new top-ranked side in the ICC rankings in the 50-over format.
While New Zealand challenged them in the first game in Hyderabad, with Michael Bracewell almost doing an unthinkable, the Men in Blue were on the top of their game in the second ODI in Raipur skittling the visitors out for just 108 runs. A win will help India tick a lot of boxes in their final ODI before a long Test season and then the IPL.
