Congress leader Digvijaya Singh kicked up a controversy by seeking proof of the Uri surgical strikes on terror camps in Pakistan, saying that the Central government always talks about the strikes but never gives any evidence.
The senior Congress leader made the remarks during a rally in Jammu and Kashmir.
“They (Centre) talk about surgical strikes and that they have killed so many of them but there is no proof,” Singh said.
In September 2016, the Indian Army conducted surgical strikes across the Line of Control (LoC), in response to a terrorist attack on an Army base in the Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir.
The Modi government has time and again hit out at the Opposition for seeking proof of the surgical strikes and accused it of disrespecting the valour of the Indian Army.
Earlier, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal had also asked for proof of the anti-terror surgical strikes.
The BJP had slammed him for belittling the armed forces and asked him not to be influenced by the Pakistan’s propaganda.
Heavily armed suspected Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists from Pakistan had on September 18, 2016 stormed the Army base in Uri, killing 17 personnel and injuring 20.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier said the surgical strikes conducted across the LoC prove that the country can defend itself when needed.
Last year, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had said that the 2016 surgical strikes are proof that India’s military prowess is no less than any country. Singh had also said that India is no longer weak, and is well-equipped to deal with all challenges.
