Twitter under Tesla boss Elon Musk is set to get swankier, as far as the user is concerned. In the coming months, the microblogging site will offer a zero-ads subscription at a higher fee. In a tweet, Elon musk said that the team is also working on addressing the ‘frequent and big’ advertisements on Twitter. The decision could mark a change in Twitter’s conventional approach to rely on targeted advertising for revenue generation.
“Ads are too frequent on Twitter and too big. Taking steps to address both in coming weeks….Also, there will be a higher priced subscription that allows zero ads,” Musk said in a thread. According to an AFP report, there have been concerns among advertisers ever since Musk fired about half of the company’s 7,500-strong workforce, as many believe that the micro blogging platform could be insufficiently staffed to carry out effective content moderation.
Among some of the other updates that are likely to make the microblogging site more user friendly and global, Twitter will translate & recommend ‘amazing tweets’ from people in other countries and cultures.
“Major Twitter improvement we just released is that you can now bookmark tweets from tweet details page. Importantly, bookmarks are *private*, unlike likes. No one other than you can see your bookmarks (sic),” Musk said.
Plans also include improving news experience on Twitter. Meanwhile, in a bid to boost revenue, Twitter offered incentives to advertisers, wherein the site will match advertisers spends up to $250,000.
According to a report in the The Wall Street Journal, Twitter is “dangling free ad space by offering to match advertisers’ ad spending up to $250,000.” The social media giant was acquired by Elon musk for $44 billion last year. “The full $500,000 in advertising must run by February 28,” the WSJ report said citing internal emails.
