The BBC documentary “India: The Modi Question” has created ripples in the Indian politics. However, on Saturday, Retired judges, retired bureaucrats and retired armed forces veterans co-sign a statement rebutting the BBC documentary. They termed the documentary “Delusions of British Imperial Resurrection?”
The letter reads, “Not only is the BBC series, judging from what we’ve seen of it so far, based on delusional reporting, but presumes to question the very basis of 75-yr-old edifice of India’s existence as independent, democratic nation that functions according to will of people of India.”
Notably, the letter was signed by over 300 retired government officials. The signatories said that BBC’s prejudice against India has resurfaced in the form of the documentary.
“So, now we have the archetype of British past imperialism in India setting itself up as both judge and jury, to resurrect Hindu-Muslim tensions that were overwhelmingly the creation of the British Raj policy of divide and rule,” the letter reads.
In the letter, the signatories said, “Glaring factual errors apart, the series – which uses the words ‘allegedly’ and ‘reportedly’ repeatedly, (not ‘factually’) – reeks of motivated distortion that is as mind-numbingly unsubstantiated as it is nefarious.”
The former government officials said that the BBC ignored the fact that the Supreme Court of India had upheld the closure report filed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) appointed by the apex court for probing the Gujarat Riots. The signatories said that the SIT team unequivocally dismissed allegations made against PM Narendra Modi.
Earlier in the day, Multiple YouTube videos sharing the first episode of the BBC documentary “India: The Modi Question were reportedly blocked as per the directions issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Along with YouTube videos, the Centre has also directed Twitter to block over 50 tweets containing links to the concerned YouTube videos.
