Chamoli DM assures formation of ‘New Joshimath’ on suggestions from affected families

Chamoli District Magistrate Himanshu Khuranna has assured that the new Joshimath will be set up after taking suggestions from the locals. Working on a war footing to search for a suitable land for permanent relocation of affected families of subsidence-hit Joshimath of Uttarakhand’s Chamoli, the district administration said the authorities are asking for suggestions and opinions of the affected families regarding rehabilitation.
Hundreds of people residing in Joshimath for decades are being rehabilitated due to land subsidence in the area. As per the latest information, 849 buildings have developed cracks so far
Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on January 18 said that 65-70 per cent people in Joshimath are leading a normal life and the Char Dham Yatra will commence in four months.
“Twenty-five per cent area of the town is affected by land subsidence so far whose population is 25000,” Dhami said.
In a huge sigh of relief, Secretary, Disaster Management, Dr Ranjit Kumar Sinha said that the width of the cracks in the buildings in Joshimath have not increased in the last three days.
Sinha informed that the administration has shifted a total of 2,190 people and 2,205 from Joshimath and Pipalkoti respectively to temporary relief camps.
Meanwhile, in a fresh challenge for the administration and locals, Joshimath was lashed with snowfall and rain was on January 20.
Due to the snowfall, the cold conditions have intensified added to the woes of people living in temporary relief camps.
Despite bad weather, the administration went ahead with the dismantling of unsafe hotels and private houses.
