Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma to be persuaded by BCCI to rethink their T20I future: Report

Team India duo of skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli might have played their last in T20Is for the national side. The veteran duo hasn’t played in the format since the T20 World Cup and now as per reports, both Kohli and Rohit are unlikely to get picked in the shortest format for the Indian team in the future. However, this comes a day after Rohit said in the pre-match press conference that he hasn’t given up on the format just yet.

As per a report in The Indian Express, both Kohli and Rohit might not get picked for T20Is even though both have expressed their availability. The report further suggested that even though both are available, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might ask and talk them into rethinking their future in the format. The matter is also set to be discussed by the selection panel in the next few days when it meets to pick the squads for the New Zealand series, which begins immediately after the Sri Lanka ODIs.

With a World Test Championship (WTC) final and the ICC Cricket World Cup slated to be held in 2023, the senior players have been told to focus on the longer formats as Rohit reiterated in the presser. That’s one of the reasons why a young side captained by Hardik Pandya has led Team India in the T20I series since the T20 World Cup and is set to continue in the near future as well as workload management will be key in a busy year.

There were several reports after the T20 World Cup debacle suggesting that Hardik, who has also become Rohit’s deputy in the ODIs will be given a completely new side to build as a captain for the T20 World Cup 2024 and will be given time to gel well together. There have been enough signs and indications since then, of Hardik taking over the reins in the shortest format but Rohit’s comments on Monday told a different story.
“At the moment I think it was made clear in the past that it’s a 50-over World Cup year for us. And for some of the guys, it’s not possible to play all formats. If you look at the schedule, there were back-to-back matches, so we decided to just look at some players’ workload that we wanted to make sure that they get enough break time and manage them. I definitely fall in that as well. We have three T20Is against New Zealand. We will see what happens after IPL. I have not decided to give up the format,” Rohit said ahead of the first ODI.
