James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water has created a new benchmark at the India box office. The Sam Worthington starrer, which takes off after the events of the 2009 Avatar is still running successfully in theatres and has become the 8th biggest grosser of all times in India across languages. More importantly, the film has managed to trump Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame at the box office as well.
Avatar 2 trumps Avengers: Endgame at box office
As per latest reports, James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water has created a new benchmark. It has now become the highest grossing Hollywood film in India with Rs 454 crore gross at the box office. In doing so, it has crossed Avengers: Endgame’s box office collection of Rs 438 gross.
Incidentally, the film has collected Rs 14060 crore worldwide at the box office.
Avatar sequels
In an earlier media interaction James Cameron had opened up about the sequels in the Avatar franchise, revealing that Avatar 2 needs to turn in a profit for the remainder of the films to be made.
In the US too Avatar: The Way of Water has maintained the No 1 spot for four consecutive weeks.The film has made $45 million from 4,340 cinemas, a minimal 33 per cent decline from last weekend. So far, Avatar 2 has generated $516 million in North America and $1.1 billion internationally.
As per a report in Variety, based on its worldwide ticket sales, Avatar: The Way of Water also stands as the highest-grossing movie released in 2022, as well as the second-biggest movie of the pandemic era, following 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.91 billion).
The James Cameron films also has Zoe Saldana and Kate Winslet in pivotal roles.
