Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who lifted a World Cup trophy in what was his final game in the showpiece event for Argentina, continues to smash new records. Two days after Argentina defeated France in one of the best World Cup finals to win a World Cup after 36 years, Messi has created history on Instagram. Messi’s World Cup-winning post, which he shared on Instagram, has now become the most-liked post on the platform.
The record was previously held by the ‘Photo of an egg’ which had garnered over 56 lakh likes after it was posted on Instagram on January 4, 2019. Messi, who reached 400 million followers on Instagram on December 20, now owns the record as his post has been liked by 56.8 lakh people. Not to forget, the traction on Messi’s World Cup-winning post is massive considering it took less than three days for the post to be liked by over 56 lakh followers on Instagram.
Messi is now also the second-most followed person on Instagram after Portugal football captain Cristiano Ronaldo – who has 519 million followers on Instagram.
The image of an egg posted from an account named ‘world_record_egg’ was previously the most-liked post on Instagram.
“Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this,” the image of the egg was shared on Instagram in January 2019.
Earlier, Messi scored a brace against France in the World Cup final in Qatar and also played a key role in the penalty shootout.
He later confirmed that he doesn’t want to retire from international football and wants to continues as a World Cup-winning player now.
“No, I’m NOT gonna retire from the national team. I want to keep playing as World Cup champions with Argentina shirt,” said Messi to TYC Sport after the game.
Reacting to his dream of winning a World Cup being fulfilled, Messi added, “It’s simply unbelievable. I knew that God was going to give me the Cup, I was sure — it was a big joy for us. I had this big dream since long time, I wanted to close my career with World Cup. I can’t ask more than this.”
