Much was expected from South Africa in their first Test match against Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane but the match ended within 2 days, with the visitors being on the losing side. A total of only 144.2 overs were bowled across two days and the pacers dominated the proceedings.
The SA pacers also did their job but the target wasn’t just enough. Following the shocking series-opener, Virender Sehwag blasted Australia for their hypocrisy. The India legend seemed to be upset by the pitch for the fixture and took to Twitter to express his disappointment.
“142 overs and not even lasting 2 days and they have the audacity to lecture on what kind of pitches are needed. Had it happened in India, it would have been labelled end of test cricket, ruining test cricket and what not. The Hypocrisy is mind-boggling . #AUSvSA,” Sehwag wrote.
SA only managed a total of 152 in the first innings in the 48.2 overs they played. Australia batted rather quickly and registered a total of 218 in 50.3 overs, thus gaining a lead of 66 runs.
SA’s batting line-up surrendered in front of the Australian pace attack and they were reeling at 69/8 at one stage. The Dean Elgar-led side was bowled out for 99, thus asking Australia to chase down 34. The home team lost 4 wickets in the chase.
The Australian pacers shared 16 wickets between them in the win. For South Africa, the pacers scalped all 14 wickets. Keshav Maharaj only bowled 2 overs in Australia’s first innings.
The quick ending saw South Africa moving down to the 3rd spot in the World Test Championship points table while India now acquire the 2nd spot.
The 2nd fixture of the series will be a Boxing Day Test match and will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from December 26 to 30.
