Gangster Mukhtar Ansari gets 10-year jail term in 1996 case under Gangster Act

Gangster Mukhtar Ansari, who was arrested by the ED  has been handed over 10-year jail term in Gangster Act case registered in 1996. The conviction pertains to a 1996 case over an attack on a police official in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur.
His associate Bhim Singh has also been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5 lakh each has been imposed on both of them.
A total of five cases were registered under the Gangster Act with two cases each registered in Ghazipur and Varanasi while one case was registered in Chandauli. All cases involved murder or attempt to murder charge.

ED probing PMLA case

The ED is also carrying out a probe into the money laundering case lodged against Ansari in 2021. It had earlier recorded the politician’s statement in the Banda jail.
His MLA son Abbas Ansari was also arrested by the federal probe agency in November after questioning at its sub zonal office in Prayagraj. This was followed by the arrest of Mukhtar Ansari’s brother-in-law Atif Raza.
The money laundering case against Mukhtar Ansari stems from multiple FIRs lodged by the Uttar Pradesh Police apart from two more FIRs lodged against a company called Vikas Constructions (a partnership firm) that was run by his wife, two brother-in-laws (including Atif Raza) and others.
Ansari, a five-time MLA, has been lodged in a jail at Banda in Uttar Pradesh for the last few years in connection with various criminal cases being probed by the state police.
ED has also got issued a lookout circular against Mukhtar Ansari’s wife Afsan Ansari as she has not deposed before it after the issuance of summons.
