Time ripe for government to implement UCC, it will not disturb existing religious practices: NHRC chief

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairperson, Justice Arun Kumar Mishra, has advocated for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), saying it will not disturb existing religious practices and ensure equal rights for women. The NHRC chief said it is the duty of the government to take positive steps to implement the UCC.

While stressing that the time is ripe for implementing the UCC, the NHRC chairperson said the UCC is prescribed by Constitution and should not remain a dead letter.
While advocating for the Uniform Civil Code, Justice Mishra said that implementation of the Act is essential to save women from discrimination.
Different kinds of religious, customary practices are resulting in discrimination of women…Bring an enactment to end it, the NHRC chief asserted.

The NHRC chief also opined that ‘male chauvanism’ needs to go as such nature stands in way of the UCC.

He lambasted the critics of the Uniform Civil Code, saying people opposing the UCC have no logic and every good thing is opposed.
Justice Mishra said that the directive to implement UCC was always there in the Constitution, the government only had to choose time.

Women are fighting for rights. They need equality. Equal rights will provide dignity to women as the female community have been denied equality for long, Justice Mishra said while asking the government to implement the UCC.

BJP MP Kirodi Lal Meena introduced the private member’s bill on Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the Rajya Sabha on November 9. Opposition parties, including Congress, Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal, and the DMK staged protests inside the Upper House.

The Uniform Civil Code calls for the formulation of one law for India that would would apply to all citizens regardless of their religion, gender or sexual orientation.
