Noted Odia actress and singer Jharana Das, known for her persona during the black and white era, breathed her last at her residence in Cuttack on Thursday night. The legendary actress’ death was condoled by Odisha CM Navein Patnaik and the President of India Draupadi Murmu. The actress and singer was 77 at the time of her death.
ODISHA CM, PRESIDENT MURMU CONDOLE DEATH
President Droupadi Murmu condoled her death, tweeting, “Saddened to know about the demise of legendary Odia actress Jharana Das. She will always be remembered for her outstanding contribution to the Odia film industry. My deepest condolences to the family and her admirers.”
Odisha CM Navein Pattnaik tweeted in Odia, “I am saddened to know about the passing away of the legendary actress of the Odia film world. From voice acting to stage and film, her impressive performances will always be remembered. May her soul rest in peace and my condolences to the bereaved family at this time of sorrow.”
Actress Pinky Paul too condoled the legend’s death and wrote, “The veteran Odia film actress Smt Jharna Das (Jhumu apa) ( National film Awardee) is no more .. 💔😭 On a personal note .. she was my all time favourite.. She will be missed profusely.. yet would always be alive in our hearts”

Jharana Das was the winner of the state government’s prestigious ‘Jaydev Puraskar’ for her lifetime contribution to the Odia film industry.
Born in 1945, Jharana Das was known for her memorable roles in films Malajahna, amadabata, Adina Megha, Abhinetru, Shree Jagannath among other classics.
She started out as a child artiste in All India Radio in the 60s, Cuttack.
She was a trained Odissi dancer and learnt the art from Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra.
Jharana Das started acting in radio dramas while in college and took voice culture training in Kolkata to add value to her acting style.
She event was a voice of AIR-Cuttack. She directed a biographical documentary film on noted Odia politician, Harekrushna Mahatab.
Jharana also worked in Doordarshan as an assistant director.
