The moment Indian cricket fans were eagerly waiting for a long period of time finally happened on Tuesday (November 25) at the Eden Park in Auckland during the first ODI between India and New Zealand as young pace sensation Umran Malik made his ODI debut.
Umran impressed on his maiden appearance for the national team in the 50-over format as he took two vital wickets of Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell. Apart from his wickets, Umran constantly hit the 150 kmph mark on the speedometer which left Indians in awe as social media lavished praise on the speedster.
It was Umran’s celebration after taking Mitchell’s wicket that caught the eye of the cricket fraternity. Umran recreated skipper Shikhar Dhawan‘s famous ‘thigh-five’ celebration after taking the big wicket. Cricket fans were quick to take notice of the same and made the video clip viral all across social media.
Umran finished his spell with a total of two wickets while conceding 66 runs in 10 overs. Arshdeep Singh also made his debut in ODI cricket for the Men in Blue but had a day to forget as his 8.1 overs were smashed for a total of 67 runs in which he did not get a single wicket.
India suffered a 7-wicket defeat while defending a total of 306 as the hosts completed the chase with a total of 17 balls to spare. Tom Latham scored a splendid unbeaten knock of 145 to register his career-best knock in the 50-over format while Kane Williamson gave him solid support in a 221-run partnership with an innings of 94 runs.
Skipper Dhawan, Shubman Gill, and Shreyas Iyer all scored half-centuries for Team India while Sanju Samson and Washington Sundar chipped in with vital cameos. Dhawan is leading the team in the absence of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul.
