Twitter’s new owner Elon Musk has let go of almost 90 percent of employees working for the microblogging platform in India, as per a Bloomberg report. It had a strength of around 200 employees in the country.
Just a few days after billionaire Musk’s takeover of Twitter, the company cut close to 3,700 people via email in a move aimed at trimming costs. Many employees learned they lost their job after their access to company-wide systems, like email and Slack, were suddenly suspended.
Twitter’s new owner Musk had also commented on the layoffs saying that he had no choice when the company is losing over $4 million a day.
Meanwhile, the microblogging platform is reportedly asking dozens fired employees to return. The platform, after being bought by Musk, fired nearly 50 per cent of its employees on Friday.
Now, Twitter is reaching out to some laid off employees asking them to return. Of the 50 per cent sacked Twitter workforce, some employees were laid off by mistake and are now being asked to return, Bloomberg quoted two people in the know as saying.
On Saturday, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey finally broke his silence on the layoffs at the company, apologising to the staff. Dorsey has said that he owns the responsibility for “why everyone is in this situation”.
Dorsey believes that the reason why everyone at Twitter is in this situation is be-cause he grew the company at a rapid speed. The 45-year-old co-founded the microblogging site in 2006.
