Hindu Janajagruti Samiti criticised Vir Das for hurting religious feelings and has urged that the stand-up comedian’s November 10 performance in Bengaluru be cancelled.
‘Hindu Janajagruti Samiti’ charged Vir Das with portraying India in a derogatory manner. A complaint against the comedian-actor was made on Monday at the Vyalikaval police station in Karnataka, ANI reported.
His caustic stand-up performances have caused him to face controversy in the past. The complaint has said that Vir Das’s comments cast a negative light on India around the world.
The statement from the group says, “It has been noticed that the controversial comedian Vir Das is holding a comedy show on November 10 at Chowdiah Memorial Hall in Malleshwaram, Bengaluru. Earlier he had made derogatory remarks against women, our Prime Minister, and India at John F Kennedy Center in Washington DC, America and denigrated the Nation. He had said that ‘In India, we worship women in the day and rape them at night’ during the performance. A case was registered by the Mumbai Police and Delhi Police in this regard. It is a serious offence under the Indian Penal Code.”
The comedian-actor-activist is known for his controversial social commentary, especially on international platforms. He has acted in many films and done several shows for Netflix and otherwise.
“In this background, it is not right to allow such a controversial person to hold such a program, in a communally sensitive area like Bangalore,” added Hindu Janajagruti Samiti’s statement, “We demand that this program should be cancelled immediately.”
