Indian batting superstar Virat Kohli became the leading run scorer in the history of T20 World Cup matches on Wednesday (November 2). The 33-year-old was 16 runs short of Mahela Jayawardene’s tally of 1016 runs from 31 matches before the start of the game, and within his first 11 balls, he crossed the Sri Lankan legend’s mark to take the number one position in the list.
The ongoing game against Bangladesh is Virat’s 25th game in T20 World Cup matches. He now has 1065 runs to his name at an average of 88.75. He scored an unbeaten 64 runs from 44 balls against Bangladesh. During his stay at the crease, he hammered eight overs and one six. Wednesday’s fifty was Virat’s third in four matches of this year’s T20 World Cup.
He started the campaign with 82 not out from 53 balls against Pakistan on October 23 and then made an unbeaten 62 from 44 against the Netherlands. In the third game against South Africa on Sunday (October 30), he got out for just 12 runs from 11 balls, but on Wednesday, he again was back to his run scoring best.
He added 67 runs with KL Rahul and initially steadied the ship for India and then after KL’s departure took the matter into his own hands to help India post a fighting total in a must-win match to keep their hopes of topping the group alive.
With his 64 not out on Wednesday, Virat has now scored a total of 220 runs in four matches of this year’s T20 World Cup. He sits at the number one position in the highest run scorers list of the ongoing tournament.
This isn’t the first time that Virat is leading the run getters list in the T20 World Cup for India. In fact, in three of the last four editions, Virat was India’s top run scorer, and during the 2014 season, he finished as the leading run scorer of the tournament.
