Virat Kohli achieved yet another milestone in his T20I career during his 12-run knock against South Africa in Perth on Sunday (October 30). Kohli was just 11 runs short of breaching the 1000-run mark in the T20 World Cup and the former India captain joined the elite list during the Super12 game against Proteas.
Kohli, who played a couple of glorious boundaries during his brief stay in the middle, now has 1001 runs in 24 matches in the ICC event. The list is topped by Mahela Jayawardene, who scored 1016 runs before playing his last T20I game in the final of the 2014 T20 World Cup.
Kohli made his T20 World Cup debut in 2012 and has been one of the best players in the ICC event. He averages 83.41 for his 1001 runs and has batted with a strike rate of 131.71. The former India captain has struck 12 half-centuries in T20 WCs.
The 33-year-old is just 16 runs away from breaching Jayawardene’s tally and climbing to the top spot in this elite list. Chris Gayle follows Kohli on the list and has 965 runs. With 919 runs, Rohit Sharma sits at the 4th spot. The India captain has been part of every T20 World Cup played so far. Rohit can also breach the 1000-run mark in the ongoing ICC event.
India struggling against South Africa
Talking of the ongoing India-South Africa fixture, the Men in Blue have lost half of their batting line-up in less than 10 overs. Lungi Ngidi has been SA’s star with the ball and has taken a four-for. His scalps include KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya. Anrich Nortje has dismissed one batsman.
India’s decision to bat first hasn’t gone down their way and the Men in Blue are struggling against the world-class pace attack of South Africa.
