Pakistan suffered its second consecutive defeat of this year’s ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on Thursday (October 27) when they failed to chase down the target of 131 runs against Zimbabwe in Perth. The defeat against Zimbabwe has put Pakistan’s chances of reaching the semifinals in serious doubt, as now they not just have to win their remaining games by a big margin but also have to be dependent on the results of other teams in the group.
Before losing to Zimbabwe, Pakistan suffered a defeat against India by four wickets in their tournament opener on Sunday (October 23) in Melbourne. Pakistan is fifth in the Group 2 points table, having suffered two defeats in as many games. The team’s performance in Australia, where they are still searching for their first win in T20Is, has left their fans and former greats unimpressed, who have come down heavily on the players and slammed team management and captain Babar Azam.
Skipper Babar, who is one of the best batters in the world at present, has failed to live up to his reputation and, after making a golden duck against India, he was caught out for just four runs against Zimbabwe. His inability to give his side a good start has hurt the team’s chances and, upset by this, one fan of the Pakistan cricket team was so angry that he threatened the Pakistan skipper. And the video of him threatening Azam by saying he was coming to his hotel to beat him up went viral on the internet.
“Babar Azam main tere hotel aariyan hai, jutiyan maran, mainu tere room da number pata lag gya hai. Phauch tu hotel” (Babar Azam, I am coming to your hotel to beat you up. I know your room number) the fan was seen yelling in Punjabi.
In their third Group 2 match of the Super 12 stage, Pakistan will face the Netherlands in Perth on Sunday (October 30). Even though Pakistan is expected to get the better of the Dutch side in this game, they can’t afford to take them lightly as this tournament has already seen as many as five upsets and another one can take place as well.
