As cricket teams of India and Pakistan were preparing for a T20 clash in a World Cup match in Melbourne Australia on Sunday, two food deliver apps Zomato and Careem Pakistan indulged in a meme war on social media.
Pakistan’s food delivery app Careem, on its official Twitter handle, took a jibe at Indian online food aggregator Zomato hours before the match. It all started with Zomato tweeting ‘Lights laga li’ (have you put on the lights) to its 1.5 million followers on October 21. Careem Pakistan’s Twitter handle later quoted the tweet with a comment laced with sarcasm.
“We hope you guys are ready for your pre-Diwali gift (read defeat),” tweeted the Pakistani counterpart of Zomato.
Zomato’s official Twitter handle took a snipe at the food delivery brand Careem Pakistan after India’s phenomenal victory.
While the outcome of the match has many overjoyed, Zomato took the moment to snap back at Careem Pakistan. The food delivery brand tweeted, “Diwali ki hardik shubhkamnaye, mithayi lenge ya aansuo se pet bhar liya? (Happy Diwali, will you have some sweets or have you decided to fill your stomach with tears of defeat),” read Zomato’s tweet.
This is not the first time that Zomato and Careem Pakistan got into a verbal duel. Earlier in September, during the Asia Cup 2022, after Pakistan beat India by 5 wickets Careem Pakistan shared a meme from the hit comedy ‘Hera Pheri’.
The meme is based on a famous scene from the film where Paresh Rawal is seen saying, “Yeh toh kisike rone ki awaz hai. (This sounds like someone crying.)”. Careem Pakistan captioned the meme with ‘Humney tou order k lye phone kia tha. (we called to place an order)”. The tweet was a jibe at Zomato over India’s loss.
However, Zomato was quick with its response. The food delivery brand took a dig at the Pakistan app by retweeting , “meme template toh apna use karo (at least use an original meme template).”
