The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on October 18 welcomed a new president as former Indian cricketer Roger Binny replaced Sourav Ganguly as the board’s president. Binny, who was a key member of the Indian squad that won the World Cup in 1983, has replaced Ganguly to become BCCI’s 36th president. The decision was expected for a while as it was reported recently that Ganguly will no more be the BCCI president.
After being removed as the BCCI president, Ganguly was offered the role of IPL chairman which he denied. Ganguly is said to return to his home state association CAB as the president for a second term.
The other BCCI office bearers, who will be elected unanimously include secretary Jay Shah, Ashish Shelar (treasurer), Rajeev Shukla (vice-president) and Devajit Saikia (join secretary). Outgoing treasurer Arun Dhumal will be the new IPL chairman.
Earlier, Ganguly – the outgoing BCCI president arrived at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai along with Binny and former IPL Chairman Rajiv Shukla for the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
On being removed as the BCCI president, Ganguly recently said at an event, “I was the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal for five years. I have been president of BCCI for years. After all these terms, you have to leave and go. As an administrator, you have to contribute a lot and make things better for the team. Me being a player, who was around for a long time, understood it. I enjoyed my time as an administrator thoroughly. You cannot play forever and you cannot remain in administration forever.”
During the Annual General Meeting (AGM), the members will contemplate whether BCCI should field a candidate for the ICC chair or support incumbent Greg Barclay for a second term.
The last date for filing the nominations for the ICC top job is October 20. The ICC Board will meet from November 11-13 in Melbourne.
