The BCCI is set to have its new president after the end of Sourav Ganguly’s stint next week. The former India captain had taken over as BCCI’s chief in October 2019 and will be completing his stint soon. The veteran administrator was expected to continue as the president after the Supreme Court of India removed the cooling-off period clause. But his stint will come to an end next week.
Ganguly will be replaced by Roger Binny, who is also a veteran administrator. Speaking at an event on Thursday (October 13), Ganguly finally broke the silence about his exit as the BCCI president and said that “he can’t be an administrator forever”.
“You can’t play cricket forever, you can’t be an administrator forever. Every administration job has a tenure and will come to an end. I will go onto do something else now. 15 years of my cricketing career were the best,” he said.
As per Cricbuzz, Ganguly wanted to continue as BCCI president and didn’t give up till Tuesday (October 11), the day when Binny filed his nomination. The report adds that Ganguly was informed about not living up to the expectations during the informal meetings and that he didn’t have the backing.
As per The Indian Express, Ganguly won’t be headed to ICC as he doesn’t have the support for the ICC Chairman’s position either. News agency PTI reported that Ganguly was offered IPL’s chairman post but he politely declined. Arun Singh Dhumal, who is serving as the treasurer of BCCI, is likely to take over as IPL’s chairman.
The veteran India captain worked as the advisor to IPL franchise Delhi Capitals before joining BCCI and might make his return to the T20 league. Ganguly also worked as a part-time commentator and might be seen sharing his insights during marquee events.
