Outgoing president Sourav Ganguly left disappointed, unlikely to be backed for ICC Chairman’s post: Report

Sourav Ganguly’s three-year stint as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India is set to end next week and the former India captain will be replaced by Roger Binny. Ganguly had taken over as BCCI’s chief in October 2019 and looked favourite to continue till 2025 after the Supreme Court of India waved off the three-year cooling-off period clause.
It’s not that Ganguly didn’t want to continue as BCCI’s president. As per Cricbuzz, the former India captain didn’t give up till Tuesday (October 12). The report adds that Ganguly was informed about his stint not living up to expectations during informal meetings. As per Cricbuzz, Ganguly did not propose Binny’s name and he looked disappointed at the BCCI office.
While many would be hoping that Ganguly might eye the ICC Chairman’s position after leaving BCCI, he might not get the support for that job. As per The Indian Express, Ganguly won’t be BCCI’s choice for that position. A clear picture regarding his future should be out soon.
Ganguly served as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal before he became BCCI’s chief. He was also associated with Delhi Capitals in the capacity of advisor.
Binny, who is set to replace Ganguly as BCCI’s president, was a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning squad. A key member of Kapil Dev-headed pace attack, Binny played his part in the title win by scalping 18 wickets in 8 matches to finish as the tournament’s highest wicket-taker.
The bowling all-rounder played 72 ODIs and 27 Test matches between 1979 to 1987. He took over coaching after retirement and was at the helm of affairs when Mohammad Kaif-led India U-19 team lifted the World Cup for the first time. He also served as a national selector. Roger’s son, Stuart Binny, also played for Team India.
