West Indies all-rounder Rahkeem Cornwall on Thursday created history as he scored a double century in the shortest format of the game. The right-handed, hard-hitting all-rounder was on fire for his team, Atlanta Fire, in the USA-based T20 league, Atlanta Open 2022, scoring an unbeaten 205 runs from 77 balls with the help of 17 fours and 22 sixes.
The 29-year-old all-rounder, who has represented Men in Maroon in nine Test matches till date, played an innings to remember for ages as his brutal assault helped him to do something which no other player had been able to do so till date.
Thanks to his sensational hitting, his team posted a total of 326 runs on the board for the loss of just one wicket against Square Drive and won the match by a margin of 172 runs after they restricted the opposition to 154 runs for the loss of eight wickets.
However, Cornwall’s record feat will not go into the history books of T20 matches as the Atlanta Open is not a recognised tournament. The record for the highest T20 score will still remain with his countryman Chris Gayle, who slammed an unbeaten 175 runs from 66 balls for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL 2013 match against Pune Warriors India at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Cornwall was playing in the Caribbean Premier League until last week and was part of the Barbados Royals team, which finished as runners-up this year. The all-rounder finished as the ninth leading run getter of the tournament as he amassed a total of 242 runs in nine matches, which came at an average of 26.88 and a strike rate of 142.35.
Cornwall, who is yet to play a white-ball match for West Indies at the highest level, scored 91 runs from 54 balls against Guyana Amazon Warriors in the first qualifier match. His innings was laced with 2 fours and 11 sixes. In the final, he scored 36 runs from 21 balls but couldn’t help his side win the trophy.
