Less than 24 hours after an emotional farewell at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground that saw Jhulan Goswami’s career have a fairytale ending as the Indian women’s team completed a historic series whitewash against the England women’s team away from home. Jhulan Goswami issued a heartfelt statement to confirm her retirement from all forms of the game.
In a touching write-up posted by Jhulan on social media, Jhulan stated that hearing the national anthem before every match gave her a sense of pride. She stated that cricket has given her many gifts with the best of it being the various people alongside various walks of life she met during the journey.
Jhulan revealed that it was her dream to play for India since she attended the 1997 Women’s World Cup final at Eden Gardens and thanked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), Women’s Cricket Association of India (WCAI), and Air India for making it happen. She also expressed her gratitude to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for taking care of her injuries and promised fans that she will never go too far away from them.
A fitting farewell
Jhulan received a memento from the Indian team before the start of play at Lord’s and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur allowed her to conduct the toss. The English team gave her a brilliant guard of honour when she walked out to bat while the Indians also did the same before the start of the second innings. Jhulan bowled a brilliant spell that saw her take two wickets and conceded just 30 runs in the 10 overs which proved crucial in the Women in Blue’s brilliant victory.
Jhulan completed her career with 255 scalps in ODI cricket. She is the highest wicket-taker among women in 50-over cricket and also leads the tally of most wickets taken by a women’s player in the history of international cricket.
