‘Lost faith in courts after Babri verdict’: Muslim cleric calls for protest ahead of Gyanvapi case hearing

Ahead of the hearing in the Gyanvapi Shrinagar Gauri dispute case on September 22, All India Imam Association chief Maulana Sajid Rashidi appealed to Muslims to hit the roads, saying “they lost faith” in courts after Babri mosque verdict.
In its verdict on the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute, the apex court had ruled in favour of construction of a temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya. It also ordered that an alternative five-acre plot must be allotted to the Muslim side within Ayodhya for a mosque.
The Babri mosque was demolished in 1992 by kar sevaks claiming that originally there was a Ram temple at the same spot.
Last week, a Varanasi district court rejected the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee’s plea against maintainability of the petition filed by five Hindu women seeking worshipping rights in the Gyanvapi mosque compound.
District Judge AK Vishvesh passed the order in the case and posted the matter to further hearing on September 22.
“The court rejected the Muslim side’s petition and said the suit is maintainable. The next hearing of the case is on September 22,” said advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, representing the Hindu side in the case, ANI reported.
“It’s a win for the Hindu community. The next hearing is on Sep 22. It’s a foundation stone for the Gyanvapi temple. Appeal to people to maintain peace,” said Sohan Lal Arya, petitioner in the case.
Five women had filed the petition seeking permission for daily worship of Hindu deities whose idols are claimed to be located on an outer wall of the Gyanvapi mosque.
The Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee has said the Gyanvapi mosque is a Waqf property and has questioned the maintainability of the plea.
Earlier in May, a videographic survey of the complex was conducted following the order of a lower court.
