‘Not yet definite’: Roger Federer’s coach casts major doubts over his participation in Laver Cup

The 2022 Laver Cup set to take place next week (September 23-25) at London’s famous O2 arena is set to be an emotional occasion as it will be the swansong of Roger Federer. The Swiss maestro announced on Thursday (September 15) that he will be retiring from competitive tennis at the end of the event.
Federer is set to be part of a star-studded European team on the event which also includes Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Casper Ruud, and Andy Murray. They will look to defend their title against a World XI team. Federer had played a key role in the inception of the tournament that has been played every year since 2017 apart from 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic forced its cancellation.
While fans are excited to catch a glimpse of Federer for one last time in London, the 20-time Grand Slam champions’ coach Severin Luthi dropped a major bombshell on fans and revealed that his participating in the event is not certain but claimed that he has been training hard to play at least one singles or doubles match at the event.
“It’s not definitive yet but he trained hard last week and is training again this week. His aim is to play something – whether it’s singles or doubles we’ll have to see, but his aim is still to play at the Laver Cup – definitely. We have 3 hours in the morning. Trained and in the afternoon another 2 hours of training, I want to do my job well there,” said Luthi to Blick.
Federer has been struggling with major injury issues that have seen him undergo multiple surgeries on his knee in the last three years. His last competitive appearance came at the 2021 Wimbledon where he lost in the Quarter-Final to Hubert Hurkacz at the iconic Centre Court.
