Virat Kohli continues to rule social media, becomes first cricketer to reach 50 million followers on Twitter

Former Indian captain Virat Kohli, who resumed his cricketing duties in Asia Cup 2022 following a month’s break, rediscovered his form in the tournament – where he also ended his century drought. Days after he scored a century against Afghanistan in Asia Cup 2022, Kohli has achieved another major milestone as he has become the first cricketer ever to complete 50 million followers on Twitter.
One of the most popular cricketers on the planet, Kohli already boasts of a massive fan following on Instagram – where he currently has 211 million followers. He also has over 49 million followers on Facebook which take his social media presence to over 310 million followers.
In Asia Cup 2022, Kohli was the second-highest run-getter after Pakistan’s opener Mohammad Rizwan. While India failed to reach the final of the tournament, Kohli got the monkey off his back by scoring his 71st international century. While he was scoring centuries at will once upon a time, Kohli had to wait for 1019 days to score his 71st ton – which was also his first century in the shortest format of the game.
Opening the innings with KL Rahul against Afghanistan, Kohli hammered unbeaten 122 runs off just 61 balls. After looking off-colour in the last few months, Kohli took a month’s break which worked in his favour. Ahead of the tournament, Kohli confessed how he was trying to “fake intensity” at a time when he was not mentally there on the field. Kohli also revealed that during the break, for the first time in over 10-12 years, he did not pick up the cricket bat.
After his century against Afghanistan, Kohli was interviewed by Indian captain Rohit Sharma – who congratulated Kohli on ending the century drought and also highlighted how his form was crucial from the team’s perspective and how his presence in the dressing room helps players. Kohli also thanked Rohit and the team management for letting him play the way he wants to.
