Indian Railways’ revenue till August 2022 nears Rs 95,500 crore, up 38% YoY; passenger traffic up 116%

The Ministry of Railways  said the overall revenue of Indian Railways at the end of August 2022 was Rs 95,486.58 crore, up by over Rs 26,271 crore or 38% as compared to the corresponding period of last year.
The revenue from passenger traffic was Rs 25,276.54 crore, recording an increase of Rs 13,574.44 crore or 116% over the same period of last year. Passenger traffic also increased compared to last year in both the segments, reserved as well as unreserved.
The growth from the long-distance reserved mail express trains has been sharper than the same in passenger and suburban trains, the ministry added.
The other coaching revenue was Rs 2437.42 crore, up by Rs.811.82 crore or 50% over the year-ago period. This growth is being fuelled by robust growth in the parcel segment of Indian Railways.
Goods revenue was recorded at Rs 65,505.02 crore as of August this year, increasing by Rs 10,780.03 crore or 20% over the same period last year. This growth was achieved through incremental loading of more than 58 MT and 18% growth in the NTKMs during the period.
Food grains, fertiliser, cement, mineral oil, container traffic and balance other goods segments have been important contributors in this growth, in addition to coal transportation.
The sundry revenue was Rs 2267.60 crore, showing an increase of Rs 1105 cr (95%) over the corresponding period of last year, the statement added.
The sharp increase in revenues as compared to the previous year can be attributed to a low base owing to the second-wave of Covid-19 lockdowns across regions.
