India and Sri Lanka squared off for the first time in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 in the Super Four stage of the tournament on Tuesday (September 6). Given their form against the island nation in past one decade, India were expected to make easy work of SL. But the Dasun Shanaka-led side stunned India by chasing down the target of 174.
While it wasn’t a memorable fixture for India, there were a couple of players who achieved few milestones. Captain Rohit Sharma leapfrogged Sachin Tendulkar and became India’s highest run-scorer in the history of the tournament.
Another player who achieved a milestone was Virat Kohli. The former India skipper had a forgettable outing and was dismissed for a duck. Despite that, he climbed in an elite list and jumped to the 13th spot in the list of players with the most caps in the shortest format.
Kohli leapfrogged Ross Taylor and Mushfiqur Rahim in the elite list with an appearance against SL. He has now played 103 T20Is, one more than the two retired cricketers (Mushfiqur has retired from T20Is).
The list is topped by Rohit Sharma, who has played 136 T20Is. The India captain is followed by Shoaib Malik (124), Martin Guptill (121), Mahmudullah (121), Mohammad Hafeez (119), Eoin Morgan (115), Paul Stirling (114), Kevin O’Brien (110), George Dockrell (105) and David Miller (104)
Kohli is confirmed to play T20 World Cup and can leapfrog many more players who are sitting ahead of him. Meanwhile, India are facing an early exit from Asia Cup after losing to SL. The defending champions lost to Pakistan in their first game of Super Four.
India have lost both their Super Four matches and have to rely on the results of other matches to make it to the final. Should Pakistan defeat Afghanistan today, they will become the second team to qualify for the final with one match still left.
