Former Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad is set to address a public meeting on September 4 at Sainik Colony in Jammu. The meeting is scheduled to commence at 11 am. Notably, this would be Azad’s first public address since the former J&K CM left Congress. The meeting holds significance as it comes in the backdrop of ‘separate party’ remark by former Congress leaders, Taj Mohiuddin and GM Saroori, who also quit the party following Azad’s suit.
“We’ll form our own party and will make an announcement within 14 days. We’re approaching Election Commission. We’ll not merge with any party, but we can have a coalition govt if we need seats, only with NC or PDP,” Mohiuddin said on August 28.
GM Saroori also said that he (Ghulam Nabi Azad) would make a national-level party when asked about the proposed political party of Azad, last week. “In the current scenario, can become new CM of J&K. He is organizing a public meeting in the union territory on September 4,” he said.
Notably, veteran Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad resigned from all party posts on August 26. In a five-page resignation note to party interim president Sonia Gandhi, Azad described the party as ‘comprehensively destroyed’ and noted the Congress at the national level has conceded political space available to it to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and state-level space to regional parties.
Earlier, Ghulam Nabi Azad, in a conversation with Times Now’s Navika Kumar, noted that he will not join any existing political party and hinted at forming his own. He will head to Kashmir where he will form his own party with the local leaders, Azad told the channel. He, however, will not play a role personally in the leadership of the outfit, he said, adding that there will be a local leader who will be made the chief of the Kashmir unit.
