Renowned Bollywood actress Swara Bhasker, who is highly active on social media and is known to openly voice her opinions on any issue, recently shared her thoughts on the prevailing cancel culture and how it has severely affected the industry.
Recently, the Ranjhanaa actress mentioned a quote stated by acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap that talked about the ‘economic slump’ in the country, due to which the audience is not interested at present to watch Bollywood films.
The Veere Di Wedding actress also said that the mindset of the audiences has been changed post-COVID-19, especially after the tragic demise of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
“… after the unfortunate and tragic suicide of Sushant, Bollywood has been painted as a really dark place, that is only about drugs and alcohol and sex.”
She then went on to explain the concept of cancel culture by mentioning the name of the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi while stating how people mockingly call him ‘pappu’ because of the image created of him in the country.
“Everyone kept calling him pappu, so now everybody believes it. I have met him and he is a perfectly intelligent and articulate man,” while adding that Bollywood is now going through ‘pappufication’.
The present trend of boycotting movies is proving to be a tough nut to crack for the Hindi film industry, especially after COVID-19 that shut down theatres but opened several avenues in the form of OTT platforms to get access to quality content across the globe.
Due to this, box office collections have now taken quite a hit since the audience is now flooding social media or openly boycotting films that allegedly hurt personal or religious sentiments or fail to meet the standards set across the globe.
As a result, the films that are now being released recently are taking great measures to ensure that their films do not get ‘blacklisted’ by the audience and give a decent performance at the box office.
On the work front, Swara was last seen in the 2018 film Veere Di Wedding along with Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, and Shikha Talsania in lead roles. She will be seen next in her upcoming film Jahaan Chaar Yaar, starring Meher Vij, Pooja Chopra, and Shikha Talsania. The film is scheduled to be released on September 16, 2022.
