The Indian badminton contingent is all set to ply its trade in the 27th BWF World Championships in Tokyo starting August 22 and will hope to replicate it success at the Commonwealth Games 2022. After winnings six medals at the CWG 2022, including three gold, the shuttlers will want to continue the momentum they built in with some success in Tokyo too.
India’s medal hopes at the world championships were dealt a body blow when star shuttler PV Sindhu announced that she will be pulling out of the tournament due to an injury. Sindhu, who won the only gold for India at the championships in 2019 was coming off from a gold in CWG as well, however, a stress fracture on her left foot ruled her out of the tournament.
However, 26 more players from India will be in action and the likes of Lakshya Sen, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty, the CWG gold medallists will be the top medal contenders among others. While Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy will also be competing in the men’s singles, veteran shuttler Saina Nehwal has also returned.
However, draws tell a dull picture as far as men’s singles is concerned as the trio of Lakshya, Srikanth and Prannoy all are in the same half, which means, only one of them would reach the semi-finals. However, the doubles duo of Satwik-Chirag is placed better as far as the medal contention is concerned as they will start their challenge from Round of 32 with the probability of facing either pair Indonesian pair — Minions (Kevin Sukamuljo/Marcus Gideon) or the Daddies (Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan).
The bronze medallist women’s doubles pairs of Treesa Jolly and G. Pullela after advancing to Round of 32 will have to face the CWG gold medallist duo from Malaysia, Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan.
