The unpredictable nature of the box office is on display at the moment with the recent set of releases having a rather surprising run. Expectations were sky high from Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha and Akshay Kumar’s Raksha Bandhan when they released in theatres on August 11, Thursday.
Trade experts expected both the biggies to revive the ailing Hindi film industry by pulling the audience into theatres in large numbers. However, the low numbers recorded by Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan sent shockwaves across the entertainment fraternity.
Amid all the noise around the Aamir and Akshay starrers, there is a film that is silently emerging as the moviegoers’ top choice. Nikhil Siddharth’s Karthikeya 2, which arrived on the big screen sans much hype, has picked up the pace and how on the back of excellent word-of-mouth.
On Saturday, August 14, the day of its Hindi release, the Telugu-language adventure thriller could only rake in Rs 7 lakh, which was pretty much on the expected lines. It then gathered some momentum on day 2 and collected Rs 28 lakh.
Karthikeya 2 hit it out of the park on day 3 as it witnessed a phenomenal growth of 292.86 per cent, earning Rs 1.10 crore. Continuing the extraordinary run, it recorded even higher figures on Tuesday, August 16, raking in Rs 1.28 crore. Its four-day Hindi total now stands at Rs 2.73 crore.
“#Karthikeya2 [#Hindi] is akin to sunshine in an otherwise gloomy scenario… Day-wise growth is an eye-opener… Sat 7 lacs, Sun 28 lacs, Mon 1.10 cr [holiday], Tue 1.28 cr [partial holiday]. Total: ₹ 2.73 cr. #India biz. HINDI version,” tweeted trade analyst Taran Adarsh
“#Karthikeya2 #Hindi witnesses remarkable growth on Day 3 [+292.86%]… Word of mouth has come into play… Phenomenal trending on extremely low screens/shows… Sat 7 lacs, Sun 28 lacs, Mon 1.10 cr [#IndependenceDay]. Total: ₹ 1.45 cr. HINDI version,” read Taran’s previous tweet.
It is now safe to say that Karthikeya 2 is making waves at the box office, which is something Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan were expected to do.
