Independence Day: Transparent selection without nepotism led India to scoring medals at CWG, says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address to the entire nation on India’s 76th Independence Day at the Red Fort said that transparency in selection has helped the country win medals at multi-sport events now, more than ever before.
Indian contingent won 61 medals in CWG 2022 in Birmingham including 22 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze. India won their first-ever gold medal in Lawn Bowls in women’s fours, while the likes of PV Sindhu, Mirabai Chanu, Vinesh Phogat, Sharath Kamal, Nikhat Zareen won gold in their respective events while both hockey teams and the women’s cricket team also ended up on the podium.
PM Modi, who had met the Indian Commonwealth Games 2022 medallists at his residence on August 13, said that it’s not like India didn’t have talent before, but the unbiased selection process is helping the athletes bring laurels to the country. “We saw in the recently concluded sports events we did well. It’s not that we didn’t have talent earlier, but transparent selection bereft of nepotism has led to India scoring medals,” PM Modi said.
Earlier in March this year at the inauguration of the 11th edition of ‘Khel Mahakumbh’, PM Modi had said that bias and the lack of transparency in selection is a thing of past, labelling it as a huge factor in players’ talent getting wasted, however, this is not the case now.
Earlier in March, after inaugurating the 11th edition of `Khel Mahakumbh’, PM Modi had said the lack of transparency in the selection of players for various tournaments is now a thing of the past in the country.
“Just like Bhai-Bhatija-waad (nepotism) in politics, there was a lack of transparency in the selection of players for sports competitions. This was a huge factor due to which our players’ talent was wasted. They used to struggle all their lives against such difficulties.
“But the situation has changed now and players are touching the sky. The shine of gold and silver medals is boosting the confidence of our youngsters,” PM Modi added added.
