After a short break, former Indian captain Virat Kohli is set to make a comeback in the much-awaited Asia Cup 2022. Following the white-ball series against England, Kohli was rested for the limited-overs series against West Indies as well as the upcoming series against Zimbabwe. Kohli’s current form has been a topic of discussion after a poor IPL season followed by a dry run with the bat in the series against England.
In the Asia Cup, as Rohit Sharma-led Team India take on arch-rivals Pakistan in their opening match of the showpiece event on August 28, Kohli will complete a unique century. Kohli will become only the second cricketer in world cricket to play 100 matches in all three formats of the game. Former New Zealand cricketer Ross Taylor, who recently announced his retirement, was the first player to achieve the milestone.
Earlier, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra shared his views on the new role Kohli is expected to play in Asia Cup 2022.
“Doesn’t matter if he (Kohli) scores a 40 or 70 because everybody has a role to play. There’s synergy in every player; regardless of the position he bats at, you are just going hell for leather. If that’s the mindset, then it’s going to be a lot easier for Kohli,” said Chopra on Star Sports.
And given the number of tons Kohli has scored in his career so far, nothing short of 100 runs is expected from him whenever he comes to bat.
However, Chopra reckoned that the team should lower down the expectations from Kohli who should be allowed to play his natural game.
“It’s the perfect set-up. The kind of cricket India is playing at the moment, the team doesn’t expect Kohli to score 70 or a 100 or finish the game. You just come and play your natural game, that’s more than enough,” added Chopra.
In the five matches (one Test, two T20Is and two ODIs) he played against England recently, Kohli returned with scores of 11 and 20, 1, 11, 16 and 17 runs respectively. It remains to be seen whether another break can help him rejuvenate and rediscover his form.
