The 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG) continue to go from good to better for India as the country has secured their first-ever medal in the Lawn Bowls in the history of the games. In a thrilling semi-final on Monday (August 1) in Birmingham, the Indian team defeated New Zealand by a margin of 16-13 in the Women’s Fours category semi-final.
By virtue of this feat, the Indian team consisting of Lovely Choubey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia and Rupa Rani Tirkey have confirmed a place in the final and are assured at least a silver medal. India will face South Africa in the final as they aim for a historic gold medal tomorrow (August 2).
The Indian side made an incredible comeback to seal their place in the summit clash. At one point in the game, they were losing by a margin of 1-6. However, the Indian team came back strongly to take a 7-6 lead and ultimately go 10-7 up against the Kiwis. While it looked like they were on course to reach the final, New Zealand once again took the lead and found themselves 13-12 up before India bounced back strongly to clinch the victory.
This will be India’s 7th medal at CWG 2022 but the colour will only be decided on Tuesday (August 2) when they face South Africa in the final. The blockbuster finale will start at 4:15 PM IST.
So far, the Indian contingent have won six medals at the Birmingham games. All of them have come in Weightlifting including the three gold medals won by Mirabai Chanu, Jeremy Lalrinnunga, and Achinta Sheuli. Further, they also have two silvers and one bronze on their tally so far.
India are expected to win more medals in Badminton, Table Tennis, Hockey, and Wrestling. The Women’s cricket team are also hot favourites to finish on the podium.
