A director of the highest calibre, SS Rajamouli helped Indian movies get international recognition with Baahuballi. Now, his most recent film, RRR, is also enjoying success abroad and is a favourite of Western film stars. Recently, Rajamouli shared a grievance he has against Netflix when speaking with the Hollywood filmmaking duo Russo Brothers.
During the talk, Rajamouli said, “First of all, I am actually angry with Netflix because they took only the Hindi version, not the rest of the four. So that is, I have a complaint against them. Second thing is, yes, I was surprised with the reception from the west.”
He further added, “ A good story is a good story for everyone. But I didn’t think I could make films for Western sensibilities. I never believed myself. So when it came out on Netflix and people started watching it and the word of mouth started spreading and the critics started giving out good reviews for that.”
He further emphasized that he is really appreciative of Netflix, saying, “Yes, I was really really surprised. And yes, it wouldn’t have been possible without Netflix. For that, I have great regard for them.”
RRR was one of the biggest movies to come out in 2022, which made $1200 million worldwide and set multiple box office records. With subtitles in 15 different languages and over 47 million total viewing hours, the March release of the movie also quickly rose to the top of the list of Indian movies on Netflix.
