Days after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) seized a huge amount of cash from Arpita Mukherjee’s second residence, sacked West Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee said the money does not belong to him.
Chatterjee, who is the prime accused in the WBSSC scam, was brought to ESI hospital in Kolkata for medical examination today. Arpita Mukherjee is his close aide and another accused in the West Bengal SSC recruitment scam.
Both Chatterjee and Mukherjee were arrested earlier this month.
When asked who is behind the teacher recruitment scam, the former minister said, “When the time comes, you will know… the money does not belong to me.”
Earlier this week, the ED seized around Rs 50 crore cash from two homes belonging to Mukherjee during raids in connection with alleged irregularities in recruitment of teachers.
ED sleuths had to break open a door to get into two flats in Belghoria’s Rathtala locality as the keys to open them could not be spotted, an official said.
“We have found a good amount of money from one of the flats in a housing complex. We have brought three note counting machines to know the exact amount,” he told media.
The CBI, as directed by the Calcutta High Court, is looking into the alleged irregularities committed in the recruitment of Group-C and D staff as well as teachers in government-sponsored and aided schools on recommendations of the West Bengal School Service Commission. The ED is tracking the money trail in the scam.
