Sandhya Gurung, who is the coach of boxing superstar Lovlina Borgohain has reportedly received accreditation for the Commonwealth Games 2022 after the Tokyo Olympic medallist shared a viral tweet about how her preparations for the Commonwealth Games were hampered on Monday. Sandhya has been added to the Indian contingent days before the start of the Commonwealth Games in the United Kingdom (UK).
Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina had claimed that her personal coach Sandhya failed to enter the Games Village because she was not allotted accreditation. A day after the Indian boxing squad arrived at the Games Village in England, the decorated pugilist shared a lengthy message and explained how ‘continuous harassment’ and ‘politics’ have affected her training ahead of the showpiece event.
“Today with a lot of grief, I want to tell everyone about the continuous harassment going on with me. The coaches who helped me win an Olympic medal are always being side-lined which has severely impacted my training schedule,” Lovlina explained in her Twitter post. “One of the coaches is Sandhya Gurungji, who is a Dronacharya awardee. I had to plead with folded hands to get my coaches included in the contingent. I am feeling mentally harassed because of this ordeal,” she added.
According to multiple reports, Lovlina’s personal coach Sandhya has joined the Indian contingent for the 2022 edition of the Commonwealth Games on Tuesday. “Sandhya was brought to the boxing village today morning and given accreditation. She is the with the team now,” an Indian Olympics Association (IOA)official was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
As per a statement released by the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), only 33 percent (1/3rd) of the playing contingent is allowed as support staff. Sandhya had assisted boxer Lovlina during the 15-day training camp of the Tokyo medal winner in Ireland prior to the start of the Commonwealth Games. The 2022 edition of the Games will be hosted by Birmingham.
