Wipro hires 15,446 employees in June quarter; attrition rate drops slightly to 23.3%

IT major Wipro hired 15,446 employees, including 10,000 freshers, during the April-June 2022 quarter, while its attrition rate eased marginally to 23.3 percent during the reported period from 23.8 percent in the previous three months.
The software services major has made one of the highest hiring in first quarter of the ongoing fiscal compared to its peers like TCS and HCL Tech. The country’s second largest IT firm Infosys is yet to announce its quarterly result. On Wednesday, Wipro presented its quarterly earnings.
Wipro’s attrition has so far seen an uptick and is now showing signs of easing. It employed 2,58,574 as of June 30, 2022.
Wipro had made its highest-ever net addition in FY22, adding 45,416 employees.
The company had earlier announced it would be rolling out promotions quarterly from July onwards up to the mid-management level, and salary hikes will also be given in September.
Attrition has been elevated across the sector, with analysts expecting attrition in the sector to remain above 20 percent. TCS’s attrition was recorded at 19.7 percent, while HCL Tech’s stood at 23.8 percent.
TCS had a net addition of 14,136 staff during the quarter, and HCL added 2,089, both of which were significantly lower than their previous quarter additions.
Wipro CEO Thierry Delaporte said had earlier said that the company will hire 38,000 freshers in FY23, on the back of increased demand as well as an uptick in attrition.
Meanwhile, the IT firm reported about a 21 per cent year-on-year fall in its consolidated net profit at Rs 2,563.6 crore for the first quarter ended June 2022.
The profit for the period (attributable to the equity holders of the company) stood at Rs 3,242.6 crore in the year-ago period.
