As West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee prepares to give a speech on Martyrs’ Day in Kolkata on July 21, the Trinamool Congress has prepared a plan to telecast her speech on giant screens in the capitals of other seven states as well.
According to reports, Mamata Banerjee will outline TMC’s national plans in the context of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls during the speech.
Over the last two years, the TMC organised the Martyrs’ Day programme virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic and telecast the same in some of the states in northeastern India.
However, this year’s meeting will be held in a conventional manner, with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and TMC’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee addressing the crowd from Kolkata’s traditional venue.
Keeping the national perspective in mind, their speeches will be televised in seven other states’ capitals on giant screens. It is being planned to telecast it in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Goa, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. A final decision will be made within a day or two regarding the seventh state.
Kunal Ghosh, the party’s spokesman and state general secretary, said the TMC is expanding its base in other states slowly but steadily.
“In Meghalaya, we are currently the principal opposition party. So, keeping in mind our expanding national base, we have decided to telecast the speeches of Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee on giant screens in states other than West Bengal,” said Ghosh.
The Chief Minister’s speech will also be telecast on giant screens in all the district headquarters of West Bengal.
After the Trinamool Congress seized power in West Bengal in 2011, ending the 34-year Left Front rule, the regular feature in every Martyrs’ Day event was the joining of leaders from other parties.
In political circles, speculations are rife that a couple of heavyweight BJP leaders will join the TMC this year. However, the Trinamool leadership remains completely silent on this issue.
