Lionel Messi didn’t want to join Paris Saint-Germain in the first place but Barcelona’s economic situation forced him to seek a future away from Camp Nou. Messi joining PSG, landing a contract until 2023. But now, PSG are reportedly keen to extend the Argentine forward’s stay until 2024.
As per a report in Marca, PSG have already hinted to Messi that they are planning to offer him a new contract. Though the offer hasn’t been officially presented as yet, Messi himself has also stressed that he isn’t looking to make a decision over his future till the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup this year.
By the time the FIFA World Cup in Qatar concludes, Messi would only have 6 more months in his contract. Heading into January, he would have the option to explore the market further and even assess a possible return to Barcelona, his boyhood club.
Though nothing concrete has taken place so far, rumours of Barcelona wanting to re-sign Messi have surfaced on and off. If the Catalan giants manage to resolve their financial concerns, there’s no reason why Messi wouldn’t want to come back and finish his career with the Spanish giants.
But, the French champions wouldn’t want such a situation to arise and will definitely like to tie down the player to a new contract. Messi doesn’t just bring sporting credentials on the field but his presence also gives the team a huge financial boost in terms of sponsorships. PSG’s revenue had skyrocketted when they had signed Messi last summer and the club wouldn’t want to lose out on those extravegant figures by letting go of Messi.
Messi has already started training with PSG ahead of the start of the new Ligue 1 season. Videos and pictures of his training session in Paris with teammates have been surfacing online.
PSG will begin the new season on July 31st when they take on Nantes in the French Super Cup. The Ligue 1 season will get underway one week after that match.
